Updated: Sep 11, 2023

Family Road Trip

Memorial day is just around the corner and according to the American Automobile Association more than 35 million American’s are planning to hit the road for a long weekend getaway. With so many people traveling how can you make sure the journey is just as much fun as the destination? Here are our top 5 tips to keep the family entertained when hitting the road this holiday weekend.

1- Play Games:

Yes, those games, you know the ones we used to play as kids. Car games are an excellent way to make the time on the road fly by. Simple family favorites like I Spy, the License Plate Game, and 20 Questions require nothing other than your imagination and the open road, and the whole family can play along. Or look for some simple games like the Alphabet Game, Mad Libs, and Bingo on Amazon to take along in the car with you.

Tip: Bring extra crayons and pencils to pass around so you can easily hand them to the kids as they get dropped throughout the ride.

2- Listen to Audiobooks:

Need a break from talk radio or the same repetitive loop from your favorite satellite radio station? Audiobooks are a perfect way to keep the gang entertained on a long drive. Make a family wish list to be sure you are choosing books that everyone will love so you can listen together.

Tip: You can always follow up the book with a game of trivia after the book is over!

3- Bring along Portable Entertainment:

In our very digital world we have tablets, smartphones, and portable gaming devices at our fingertips. They are a great option to entertain both kids and adults alike. Be sure to download your favorite movies, TV shows, music, and games before heading out.

Tip: Be sure to include games that do not require wifi or cellular service like Mini Metro and SevenBloks so you don’t use up your data plan to quickly.

Play Ground Pit Stops

4- Plan for Pit Stops:

We all know the urge to drive straight thru can be tempting. But remember there can be adventure along the way. Be sure to plan for some pit stops so everyone can stretch and unwind.

Tip: Research parks, attractions and rest stops along your route and add them as stops in your navigation system before hitting the road.

5- Snack time:

No one wants to be stuck in a car with the hangry gang. Put together a road trip friendly snack stash to keep everyone's hunger at bay. Choose some healthy options like fruit and vegetables, and some special treats like chips and candy. Avoid snacks that can be potential chocking hazards especially for little ones.

Tip: Keep a package of baby wipes accessible to quickly clean up messy hands and little spills.

I never thought of adding in the pit stops ahead of time. What a great idea and a way to plan ahead so you're not upset when it takes longer than expected.

The add stops feature in most navigation apps is an under used feature. Hope it helps!
