Several time a year runDisney events take place throughout the various Disney Parks around the world and offer a unique experience for runners of all levels. As a fairly new runner there are some things, I wish I had known before I laced up my sneakers the first time. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your race:

1. Start with a plan:

Before you begin your training, create a plan that includes your running schedule, distance goals, and cross-training activities. This will help you stay on track and avoid injury. There are several training plans available online and you can find race specific plans on runDisney’s website.

2. Build up your endurance:

Running long distances requires endurance, so gradually increase your mileage over time. Start with shorter runs and gradually build up to longer distances. Consider using a fitness tracking app on your phone or smart watch to help track your progress. If you are a new runner, remember this journey is not a straight line from the couch to the finish line, so be sure to look at your progress over time.

3. Incorporate strength training:

In addition to running, it's important to incorporate strength training exercises into your routine. This will help improve your overall fitness and reduce your risk of injury. Cross training will also help you stay engaged in your plan to avoid boredom.

4. Figure out the right gear:

Not all shoes are created equal. Finding the one that is the best fit for you may take some time. Consider visiting a local running store for some fit recommendations. As your runs get longer you may want to consider adding a hydration belt and fuel to your gear. Always test new gear during training before trying it during a race. This includes any costume pieces you are thinking of wearing during your race.

5. Don't forget about nutrition:

Proper nutrition is essential for fueling your body during training and on race day. Be sure to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Staying properly hydrate and fueled will impact your training.

6. Stay motivated:

Training for a race can be challenging, so it's important to stay motivated. Join a running group, find a running buddy, listen to music, or set small goals to help you stay on track. Find an accountability partner, someone who helps motivate you if you get off track. Join a runDIsney community.

7. Stay Safe:

Always consult with your health care provider before beginning a new workout routine. Be aware of your surroundings when running outdoors and try not to run alone. Vary your route when possible. Be mindful of the elements and dress accordingly.

Now you are ready to get started for your runDisney event and have a magical race day experience. Don’t worry about being the “perfect” runner. Set goals that are meaningful for you, give yourself time to learn and grow. Remember everyone starts somewhere, so have fun and enjoy the journey. I’ll see you at the start line!
